Acular is an ophthalmic preparation. It contains Ketorolac Methamine as an active pharmaceutical ingredient. It belongs to the category of medicine termed as non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs). The ophthalmic preparation of the Acular eye drop was approved in 9 November 1992 by FDA. It acts by blocking the release of prostaglandin hormone which is responsible for the development of the hypersensitivity reaction in the eyes, i.e. irritation, swelling, redness, itching and pain. It posses anti inflammatory and analgesic activity to carried out their pharmaceutical activity.

Uses of Acular Eye Drop:

  • To reduce seasonal allergy associated in the eyes.
  • To reduce inflammation, redness and swelling produced after the cataract surgery in the eye.
  • To reduce the effect of cystoids macular edema.
  • To reduce hypersensitivity problem this develops after corneal refractive surgery.

Mechanism of action of Acular Eye Drop:

Acular eye drop is NSAIDs agent which act by inhibiting the effect of enzyme termed as cyclo- oxygenase. This enzyme is involved in blocking the synthesis of prostaglandin by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase.  Prostaglandin causes itching, inflammation, redness, swelling and pain the eye. Hence, it produces effective and successful effects in reducing the inflammation and pain within the eye.

Contraindications of Acular Eye Drop:

Acular eye drop should not be used in several conditions. These conditions are:

  • Disorder like kidney or liver impairment, heart related disorder, arthritis and diabetes mellitus.
  • Eye disorder like glaucoma or dry eye syndrome.
  • Recent eye surgery other than from cataract.
  • Blood related disorder like bleeding or clotting problem.

Drug interactions of Acular:

Acular eye drop should not be administered with some drugs because they may be interacting with each other and altering the activity of each other. Such drugs are:

  • Other NSAIDs drugs like Aspirin
  • Vitamin preparations
  • Anticoagulant drugs like Warfarin
  • Herbal drug preparations

Storage conditions:

Some storage conditions are:

  • Store in air tight and well closed bottle and also keep away from the reach of the pets and children.
  • Keep at room temperature and protect from heat and moisture.

Dose and mode of administration:

Acular eye drop is an ophthalmic preparation which comes in the form of eye drop in the market. The effective and safer recommended dose of the Acular eye drop is to be instilled 4 times in a day one drop each time. The dosage form started within 24 hours of eye surgery. This therapy should not meant for long term usage.


 It is advised not to instill more drops of the medicine at a single time or increase the dosing frequency. If overdosing happens, then wash your eyes immediately.

Missed dose:

Take the medication on time, but if you miss any dose, then instill it as soon you remember. But if it is almost time for the next dose, then skip previous dose of the drug.

Side effects:

Some side effects of the dosage form of Acular eye drop are:

  • Common side effects: Headache, mild burning sensation, itching in the eyes, puffy or swollen eyelids and stinging in the eyes.
  • Serious side effects: Burning sensation in eyes, loss of vision, drainage from the eyes, white patches in the eyes, Sensitivity towards light and breathing problem.


Some precautions are:

  • Don't wear a contact lens while instilling the Acular eye drop.
  • Wash your eyes properly prior to instilling the drops.
  • Discard the dosage form after 4 weeks of opening.
  • Don't instill the double or extra dose of Acular eye drop.
