Lioresal is an oral medication act as a muscle relaxant and antispastic agent. Lioresal helps in the treatment of severe muscle spasms that occurs due to a number of causes like brain injuries or spinal cord injuries or neurological disorders. Lioresal is composed of Baclofen as an active moiety. There is not reported any tolerance to the therapeutic effects of Baclofen because the medication has the capacity to retain its therapeutic anti-spasmodic effects even after number of years after regular use.

The active moiety of the medication, Baclofen provides its therapeutic effects by activating the GABA-a receptor. Baclofen acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitttor and assumed to block mono and polysynaptic reflexes. As the GABA-A receptors gets stimulated, it results in inhibition of release of excitatory amino acids such as glutamate and aspartate.


  • Lioresal is contraindicated if the person is hypersensitive to the Baclofen or to any excipients.
  • Lioresal is contraindicated if the patient is suffering from peptic ulcers.

Lioresal show interaction with following kind of medications- antidepressants, lithium, antihypertensive, agents that reduces renal function, drugs that cause depression to central nervous system, dopa decarboxylase inhibitor, medicines that depresses central nervous system, renal function reducing agents and some other medicines.

How to use Lioresal:

This medication is taken via mouth, with or without food. It can be taken with a little amount of meal also. It is taken three times in a day. The medication should be started from low dose and can be increased to the higher doses later on to prevent the side effects or overdose.

  • Lioresal is administered into the spinal canal in the form of injection or through an implantable infusion pump.
  • Lioresal should not be used if it contains particles either cloudy or discolored or if the vial is cracked or damaged.
  • Needles, syringes or other materials should not be reused.

Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and pets.

If you miss a dose of Lioresal, do contact with your doctor. Similarly in case if overdosing symptoms appears, discuss with your physician.

The side effects of the medication includes-

Back pain, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, increased salivation, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting.

Store the medication properly at controlled room temperature 15°-30°C (59°-86°F).


  • Lioresal can cause dizziness or drowsiness and these effects can be worsened if a person is taking alcohol with this Lioresal. Driving like alert required activities should also be avoided while taking Lioresal.
  • Do not suddenly stop taking this medication. Follow the best way to reduce the intake of medication slowly. Discontinue the medication gradually by reducing the dose successfully over a period of 1-2 weeks. Withdrawl symptoms may include high fever, confusion, and increase in muscle stiffness and spasms, changes in mental status, muscle destruction, multiple organ failure and death.
  • Lioresal should be used with caution in the children below 4 years, because there is not any evidence of safety and efficacy.
