Zaditor eye drop is an ophthalmic dosage form. It contains Ketotifen Fumarate as an active component. It comes under the class of medicine termed as antihistamine agent. It is also belongs to category of over the counter drugs. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of histamine in the cells and impedes the progress of the allergic reaction in the eyes.

Uses of Zaditor eye drop:

  • To treat itching produced by allergies.
  • To demolish the itching and inflammation of eyes after the conjunctivitis.

Mechanism of action:

Ketotifen Fumarate works by inhibiting the release of histamine, which is responsible for the inflammation and itching in the eyes. It also acts as a mast cell stabilizer which protects the eyes from allergic infections by preventing degranulation of mast cell.


Zaditor eye drop should be contraindicated in numerous circumstances. Such circumstances are:

  • Allergy to any active or inactive ingredient of the dosage form of Zaditor eye drop.
  • Past health problem like renal or hepatic damages, heart problem, arthritis and diabetes mellitus.
  • Diseases related to eyes like glaucoma or dry eye syndrome.
  • Eye surgery for glaucoma and cataract.
  • Contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding mother.

Drug interactions:

Zaditor eye drop should not be taken with certain medicines as they both can interact to each other and change the therapeutic effects of each other. Those medicines are:

  • Herbal drug preparations
  • Anticoagulant drugs like Warfarin
  • Vitamin preparations
  • Other antihistaminic drugs
  • Non prescription drugs

Storage conditions:

Some storage conditions are:

  • Keep the dosage form in air tight and well closed bottle.
  • Store at room temperature ranges from 23 to 30° C and should be protected from light and humidity.

Dose and mode of administration:

Zaditor eye drop is an effective dosage form for eye infections. The recommended dosage form for its safer usage is one drop instilled twice in a day, i.e. every 8- 12 hours.


Some concern should be taken during the medication for getting continuous effectiveness throughout the period of medication. It should not consider for more usage as per recommendation of dosage form.

Missed dose:

Instillation of the dosage form of the Zaditor eye drop should be done at the same time every day. If you missed any dose of it, then try to instill it quickly in the eyes. If the time for next dose reached, then avoid previous dose and instilled the next dose of it.

Side effects:

Some side effects of the dosage form of Zaditor eye drop have occurred after the administration of drug. These side effects are:

  • Common side effects: continuous  discharge from the eye, burning sensation, dryness in the eyes, nasal congestion, headache, redness in eyes, flu like symptoms and inflammation of the cornea.
  • Serious side effects: Breathing problem, pain in the eyes, severe hypersensitivity problem (irritation, inflammation and swelling of the face, lips, tongue or mouth), breathing problem and pain in chest.


Some precautions are:

  • Don't try to swallow the dosage form of Zaditor eye drop, as it may be harmful to the patients.
  • Not beneficial for the children under the age of 3 years.
  • If the eyes of the patient become red, then avoid wearing the lens.
  • It does not show any beneficial effect in reducing the irritation caused by contact lens.
  • Avoid the medication if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
